Surat’s diamond workers up in arms against bus operators due to bus fare hike

Surat: For the thousands of diamond workers in Surat, the recession woes don’t seem to end. With Diwali coming close, many of them who are looking to return to their hometowns are facing a new challenge- doubling of bus fares this Diwali. Many of them are already facing immense challenges with their finances, with many laid off or working at half of the salaries they generally did.
The Diamond Workers Union has filed a complaint with the Police Commissioner of Surat accusing the private luxury bus operators of doubling the fares even as most of their customers- diamond workers- aren’t able to afford the prices to get back home to Saurashtra this Diwali. The Union alleges that the fare for a single sleeper seatr, which was Rs.700 on regular days, has now risen to Rs.1400 for Diwali. Similarly, double sofa seat’s prices have increased to Rs.2800 from Rs.1400.
With the recession showing no signs of easing, the diamond artisans are facing immense financial difficulties, especially since their incomes aren’t covering their expenses. Travelling to Diwali is a yearly ritual, as most companies shut down for this period.
The Union says they aren’t against the private bus operators, but they shouldn’t misuse the rise in demand to their advantage at this critical juncture. They also allege that these operators cram more than three people on a sleeper seat designed for one, and blatantly disregard safety and traffic rules.
The Union has requested the Surat City Collector and Police Commissioner to look into the matter, demanding they issue a public notification ordering them to not charge more than a set amount, especially in these circumstances.
